How the World Cup 2026 Group Stage Works

Here's the basic structure. 48 teams. 12 groups. Four teams per group. It's a clean setup, honestly -each team plays three matches in a round-robin against the other three sides in their group. No more, no less at this stage.

Now, qualification from the group stage is where it gets a bit more interesting than previous tournaments. The top two from each group advance automatically that's 24 teams right there. But then there's a third tier: the eight best third-placed finishers across all 12 groups also go through. So in total, 32 teams make it to the knockout rounds, which is the Round of 32.

That "best third-placed" rule is worth paying attention to. Not every third-place finish is equal — your points, goal difference, and goals scored all get compared against every other third-placed team in the tournament. It's the same system UEFA used in the Euros, so it's not entirely new territory. Still, it means finishing third doesn't automatically send you home.

How Teams Are Ranked Inside Each Group

Standard stuff here, but let's just run through it. Points come first a win gets you 3, a draw gets 1, and a loss gets you nothing. If two or more teams are level on points, it goes to goal difference, then goals scored. If it's still tied after all that, head-to-head results between those specific teams come into play.
